Types of Swimming Pools

If you are planning to build an in-ground swimming pool, the type of pool is one of the first things you will have to consider. Most pool contractors will install one of three swimming pool types: Concrete, Vinyl Liner, or Fiberglass.

Vinyl Liner Pool

Swimming Pool with a new liner as water fills itThis method of building a pool is one of the most common, therefore making it a good value. It also proves to be a rather fast installation, furthering its value. You can choose from dozens of vinyl pool liner patterns.

Concrete / Gunite Pool

Concrete/Gunite PoolA Concrete/Gunite pool will cost you more than a vinyl liner pool. However, it is more durable and you won't have to get a new liner every so many years.

Fiberglass Pool

Free-form Fiberglass PoolFiberglass pools have a fairly quick installation process. They are also know as being long lasting and have a rather low level maintenance needed. They can be limited in size and shapes.

Vinyl Liner Pools

In recent years, the number of vinyl liner pool installations has grown, along with the number of vinyl liner patterns available.

Once excavation is complete, an in-ground vinyl liner pool is constructed by joining prefabricated support walls made of a strong polymer steel. Once the wall panels have been installed, the bottom is lined with either sand or pool-crete. Pool-crete is a common pool base consisting of portland cement and vermiculite. The vermiculite is porous, allowing moisture to pass through, which guards against cracking.

Next, a one-piece flexible vinyl pool liner is installed. Heavy vinyl is used, usually either 20 mil or 27 mil. You should never use a liner thinner than 20 mil! Paradise Pools uses only the highest quality pool liners, and they're made locally, in Suwanee, GA.

Concrete Pools

Concrete pools are durable, can be shaped into virtually any size or shape, and allow for different types of finishes such as painted plaster, tile, stone, Pebble Tec, etc.

Once the ground excavation is complete, concrete / gunite pools are built by lining the sides and bottom of the hole with steel rods (rebar). Your pool builder will then pump concrete via a hose and "shoot" it from a special spray gun onto the rebar, forming the pool's shell. This is where the term shotcrete comes from. Shotcrete is already mixed with water, as in the big ole cement trucks that you see on construction sites. Gunite is a "dry" process where the water is added to the mix at the nozzle when it is sprayed.

Concrete / gunite swimming pools can be the most expensive, but they are durable and are the most flexible from a creative standpoint. Let us help you create the perfect aesthetic by finding that perfect combination of pool shape, pool surface, coping and decking.

Fiberglass Pools

Free-form iberglass swimming pool with cobblestone deckingInstead of "building" a swimming pool in your backyard, you can opt to have a one-piece prefabricated shell delivered to your house on a large flatbed truck. This cuts out a large chunk of time that would be spent building a metal or concrete shell. Even pool steps and benches are usually part of the fiberglass shell.

Once the ground excavation is complete, the fiberglass pool shell is lowered into position using a crane. If you choose the fiberglass swimming pool option, please be sure your building site is accessible, and has enough space for the delivery truck and crane.

Depending on the type of building site you have, installing a fiberglass pool may be the most economical type of in-ground swimming pool installation out there. It certainly can be the fastest kind to install. Although design options are somewhat limited with fiberglass pools, manufacturers now have a large assortment of shapes and sizes.
