Chlorine is made by passing electricity through salt water. The salt generator system's computerized control unit converts your home's AC current (120V or 240V) into low-voltage DC current. That current is then sent into an electrolytic cell (a set of electrically charged metal plates) mounted in a plumbing fixture. As the salted pool water passes through the electrolytic cell, the NaCl (salt) molecule is separated into Sodium (Na) and Chloride (Cl). In the presence of water, Hypochlorous Acid (Chlorine), is formed. This method produces Chlorine constantly and maintains a residual level of Chlorine that prevents algae growth and other substances from harming your pool.
